Why it matters
In this case JNU has removed the four from campus first, with a proctorial inquiry still to be completed, while the police case runs separately. Students living in campus hostels are directly covered by the administration's warning against sheltering the four.
The JNU hostel clash of 5 November has led Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi to rusticate four students and bar them from the whole campus with immediate effect, the news agency PTI (Press Trust of India) and The Tribune reported on 7 and 8 November 2026. The order from the university’s Proctor’s Office keeps them out while a proctorial inquiry, the university’s own disciplinary probe, is completed.
The JNU hostel clash took place at about 3 pm on Thursday, 5 November, in room 119 of Barak Hostel on the campus. Delhi Police have registered a case that includes attempt to murder, and one student lost the sight of one eye, police told PTI.
What happened in the JNU hostel clash
According to both reports, a group of students allegedly entered another student’s room, and a dispute turned into a fight in which students allegedly attacked each other with sharp-edged weapons. PTI’s first report said three students were seriously injured.
In a later account to PTI on Saturday, police said one student allegedly attacked a fellow student with a meat cleaver because he objected to the second student’s friendship with a woman student. The injured student, a second-year language student, was taken to the Trauma Centre of AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), where doctors told police he had lost vision in his right eye. He had surgery and was still in the trauma centre on Saturday evening, PTI reported, with injuries to his eye, nose, face and shoulders and several fractures, according to the hospital.
Police said the student accused of the attack, who is doing a master’s degree (MA) at JNU, was also hurt, and that three other students were injured, putting the number of injured students at four. The Tribune gave a larger figure from the hospital: it reported that, according to AIIMS, 11 injured people were admitted after the violence. The reports read do not explain the gap between the two counts.

Why JNU rusticated four students
The Proctor’s Office issued the order under Sections 32(1) and 32(3) of the JNU Act, 1966, both reports said. The four cannot enter any part of the campus while the inquiry runs, and the administration has warned that anyone found giving them shelter on campus will face strict disciplinary action.
According to The Tribune, the four JNU students rusticated are two MA students, one bachelor’s (BA) student and a woman student whose name was not disclosed. The Tribune’s report also shows that one of the four is a student who was injured in the clash. NewsPlainly is not naming any of the students, who are private individuals.
In its statement, the university said it has strong systems for students to raise grievances and follows a zero-tolerance policy on violence. It said the incident threatened students’ safety, created fear on campus and disrupted both academic work and relations between students, PTI reported.
The order itself has not been published online; this article relies on PTI’s and The Tribune’s accounts of it. Rustication pending an inquiry is a removal from campus, not the final word on the case. The order as reported does not say how long the inquiry will take or what penalty may follow it.

Police case: FIR for attempt to murder, no arrest yet
The woman student who was friends with the injured student went to the police after the clash. On her complaint, the Vasant Kunj North police station registered a first information report (FIR) on Friday, 6 November, under sections that include attempt to murder, PTI reported.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goyal said the FIR had been registered and an investigation was under way. No arrest had been made until Saturday evening, 7 November, police told PTI. The Tribune also reported that the FIR includes an attempt to murder charge.
The police case and the inquiry into the JNU students are separate. The university’s order decides who may stay on campus; whether anyone is charged or arrested is for the police and, later, the courts. No court has ruled in the case.
JNU hostel clash timeline, 5 to 7 November
| When | What happened | Who said so |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Nov, about 3 pm | Clash in room 119, Barak Hostel; students taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre | PTI, The Tribune |
| 6 Nov | FIR at Vasant Kunj North police station, including attempt to murder | Police via PTI |
| 7 Nov (reported) | Proctor’s Office rusticates four students, bars them from campus pending inquiry | PTI, The Tribune |
| 7 Nov, evening | One student has lost sight in his right eye; no arrest yet | Police via PTI |
The injury figures differ by source. PTI’s first report said three students were seriously injured, and police later put the number of injured students at four. The Tribune, citing AIIMS, said 11 people were admitted. The date printed on the Proctor’s order was not given in the reports read; both outlets first reported it on 7 November.
What it means for JNU students and what comes next
For the four JNU students rusticated, the order means no entry to classes, hostels or any other part of the campus until the inquiry is completed. For other JNU students living in Barak Hostel and the other campus hostels, the administration’s warning matters directly: it has said it will act against anyone found sheltering the four on campus.
The Tribune wrote that the Barak Hostel violence has once again put campus security and violent clashes at JNU under scrutiny. More Delhi news is on our Delhi and National Capital Region page.
Two things are still open: the result of the proctorial inquiry, for which the order as reported gives no deadline, and the police investigation, in which no arrest had been made by Saturday evening.
