Why it matters

Deepotsav brings performers from five countries and invited ambassadors to Ayodhya, and large crowds to the Saryu ghats. The timings and dates matter for anyone travelling there or watching, and the lamp and drone counts are the benchmarks the state will be judged on.

Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026 reaches its main night on Saturday, 7 November, when more than 30 lakh earthen lamps are to be lit along 56 ghats of the Saryu at Ram Ki Paidi in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, followed by a show of 2,100 drones depicting the Ramayana, the Indian Express reported on Friday, citing officials. This is the tenth edition of the festival, first held in 2017.

The celebrations started on 5 November and run until 9 November, the Indian Express said. ABP Live described 7 November as Choti Diwali, the day before Diwali.

Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026: what happens on 7 November

ABP Live, in a report on 3 November, gave this timetable for the main evening:

Time (7 November) Event
5.45 pm Saryu Maha Aarti on the riverbank
6.30 pm to 7.15 pm Lamps lit together across the ghats and temple premises
7.30 pm Show by 2,100 Indian-made drones showing episodes of the Ramayana

The two reports differ on the size of the aarti. The Indian Express said 2,147 people would take part, including public representatives, councillors and members of the public. ABP Live said more than 1,100 saints and priests would perform it.

The evening also includes a floating stage that shows Ram’s return to Ayodhya through dance, music and Hindi narration, an eight-minute laser show, a 20-minute projection-mapping show and musical fireworks, according to the Indian Express.

How Ayodhya Deepotsav has grown since 2017

The first Deepotsav in 2017 had about 1.71 lakh diyas, and the 2025 edition lit 26.17 lakh, which set a Guinness World Record, the Indian Express reported. This year’s target is more than 30 lakh, and ABP Live said the organisers are aiming for a new world record.

Edition Diyas Drones
2017 (first) About 1.71 lakh Not reported
2025 26.17 lakh (Guinness World Record) 1,100
2026 (target) More than 30 lakh 2,100

By NewsPlainly’s calculation, 30 lakh lamps would be about 17.5 times the 2017 count and about 3.8 lakh, or roughly 15%, more than last year, if the target is met. The drone fleet is 1,000 larger than in 2025, an increase of about 91%.

Lighting that many lamps on the Saryu ghats takes a large workforce. About 35,000 students from colleges in Ayodhya will help with the arrangements, the Indian Express said; ABP Live put the number of volunteers at more than 34,000 and said about 55,000 litres of oil and 65 lakh wicks had been arranged.

Ramlila from five countries and 2,500 artists at Ayodhya Deepotsav

Ramlila troupes from South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Laos and Thailand will perform, each in its own language, costume and musical style, according to the Indian Express. About 2,500 artists will appear on 12 stages across the city, including performers from 16 districts of Uttar Pradesh and folk forms from other states: Karnataka’s Dollu Kunitha, Rajasthan’s Ghoomar and Bihar’s Jhijhiya, along with Tharu traditions from Pilibhit and Vantangiya performances from Gorakhpur.

A procession of 22 tableaux based on the seven kands (books) of the Ramayana will include the Ram Rath, Ram Darbar and Pushpak Viman, the Indian Express reported. ABP Live described a separate “Solah Shringar Shobha Yatra” with seven tableaux. The city also has 13 themed gateways and 20 selfie points, and an augmented-reality phone app lets visitors see five 3D Ramayana scenes by scanning marked spots at Ram Ki Paidi, the riverfront where the main lamps are lit.

Officials have invited 34 Indian ambassadors posted abroad to attend Ayodhya Deepotsav 2026, the Indian Express said.

Diyas from local potters, and what follows on 8 and 9 November

Ayodhya Deepotsav also brings orders for local potters. An order worth ₹12.8 lakh has been placed with 25 women from Gyaspur in Ayodhya and from Kajiyapur and Bhaghar Jheel in Barabanki district for 1.60 lakh diyas, the Indian Express reported, and 197 potters had received electric pottery wheels by October 2026. That order works out to ₹8 a diya by NewsPlainly’s calculation.

After the main night, more public presentations are planned for 8 November. On 9 November a separate drone show will be held only for Ayodhya’s residents, according to the Indian Express.
