Why it matters
New Zealand are now without three important players, Conway, Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman, after being bowled out for 185 in the first match. That shapes the contest India's top order faces in the next four games, starting on Saturday morning in India.
New Zealand opener Devon Conway has been ruled out of the rest of the one-day international (ODI) series against India with a concussion, and Nick Kelly will replace him for the India vs NZ 2nd ODI in Wellington on Saturday, 7 November 2026. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the change on Friday, India Today and the news agency ANI (Asian News International) reported.
The 2nd ODI starts at 7.30 am IST. India lead the five-match series 1-0 after their five-wicket win in Auckland on 4 November.
How Devon Conway got the concussion
Conway was injured at a fielding session at Eden Park on Tuesday, before the series opener. He and fast bowler Matt Henry went for the same catch and collided, India Today reported. Both players were given immediate medical attention and head injury assessments.
Conway was taken to the accident and emergency department of an Auckland medical facility, where a concussion was confirmed, according to India Today. The Conway concussion kept him out of the first ODI, and New Zealand Cricket has now said he will miss the remaining four matches as well. Henry, the other player in the collision, has been cleared of concussion and is available for selection on Saturday, both reports said.
Speaking at New Zealand’s pre-match press conference on Friday, fast bowler Blair Tickner called it “a freak accident” and said Conway was in good spirits, ANI reported.

Nick Kelly called up as Devon Conway’s replacement
Nick Kelly was already in New Zealand’s plans for the end of the series. India Today reported that he had originally been picked for the fourth and fifth ODIs, and has now been called up early. He was playing for New Zealand A against India A and has been released from that side to join the ODI squad in Wellington, according to ANI.
To fill Kelly’s place, Auckland Aces batter Dale Phillips has been added to the New Zealand A squad for its final four-day match against India A, India Today said.
New Zealand already used a stand-in opener in Auckland. Tim Seifert took Devon Conway’s place at the top of the order and was the hosts’ top scorer with 38, but the side was bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs.
India vs NZ 2nd ODI: New Zealand’s injury list
Devon Conway is the third important player New Zealand are without in this series, India Today reported. Two others were ruled out before it began.
| Player | Problem | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Devon Conway | Concussion after training collision | Out of the remaining four ODIs |
| Rachin Ravindra | Shoulder | Ruled out before the series |
| Mark Chapman | Hamstring | Ruled out before the series |
| Matt Henry | Cleared of concussion | Available for the 2nd ODI |
Henry’s return is a gain for the hosts. He missed the last three T20 internationals against India with a low-grade tear in his right quadriceps, the thigh muscle, and then missed the first ODI after the collision, India Today reported.

What happened in the first ODI
India’s bowlers set up the win at Eden Park. Arshdeep Singh took four wickets and Gurnoor Brar three as New Zealand were all out for 185, with Tickner’s 34 off 23 balls from No. 11 lifting the total late on. Rain then cut India’s chase to 143 in 32 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, used to reset targets in shortened matches.
Rohit Sharma was out for a duck, but Virat Kohli made 74 off 51 balls and Shubman Gill 37, and India got home at 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs. Our full report of that match is here.
Tickner told reporters he expected more help for bowlers in Wellington, with extra bounce, and noted that the ground’s square boundaries are shorter than Eden Park’s while the straight boundaries are long, ANI reported.
Remaining India vs New Zealand ODI schedule
All four remaining matches start at 7.30 am IST, which means Indian viewers watch them in the morning.

A win in the India vs NZ 2nd ODI would put India 2-0 up with three games to play. New Zealand need to win three of the last four to take the series. The 2nd ODI is at the venue India Today names as Hnry Stadium. Neither report read named New Zealand’s opening pair for Saturday.
