Why it matters
The retention lists decide how many places each team has to fill and how much money it can spend in Goa. Two extra days give teams more time to finish trades and release decisions before the player pool is shared, without moving any later step of the auction calendar.
The IPL retention deadline for the 2027 season has moved from 15 November to 17 November 2026, giving all 10 franchises two more days to decide which players they keep and which they release. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which runs the Indian Premier League, told the teams about the change in a communication on Monday 2 November, The Hindu reported. Outlook India and the news agency Asian News International (ANI) carried the same new date.
The IPL 2027 auction itself has not moved. The mini auction is still set for 16 December in Goa, according to all three reports.
Why the IPL retention deadline moved by two days
The old cut-off fell on the day of the fifth and final one-day international (ODI) between India and New Zealand, scheduled at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on 15 November. The Hindu said the extension is understood to have been prompted by that match, and Outlook linked it to the same clash. NewsPlainly’s earlier report on India’s ODI squad for the New Zealand series has the players picked for those five games.
The new date, 17 November 2026, is a Tuesday. The old one was a Sunday.

A second clash is still on the calendar. The auction day, 16 December, is also the day of India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Sportstar wrote that the BCCI had not indicated any change to that match, and Outlook said the latest communication repeated 16 December as the auction date.

IPL 2027 auction timeline: this year’s dates next to last year’s
The reports also set out the steps between now and the auction. Player registration opened on 2 November and closes on 23 November. After the retention lists are in, the IPL shares the pool of registered players with the teams, ANI reported. Teams then have until 1 December to send the list of players they want to bid for, and the final auction register, with the order in which player sets will come up, is due on 3 December, The Hindu and Sportstar reported.
The table puts those dates beside the IPL’s own figures for the last cycle, taken from its media releases of 15 November and 9 December 2025.
| Step | 2026 season (IPL releases) | 2027 season (as reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Retention lists due | 15 November 2025 | 17 November 2026 (was 15 November) |
| Player registration closes | Not in the releases read | 23 November 2026 |
| Teams’ shortlist due | Not in the releases read | 1 December 2026 |
| Final auction list out | 9 December 2025: 350 players from 1,390 registered | 3 December 2026 |
| Auction | 16 December 2025, Etihad Arena, Abu Dhabi | 16 December 2026, Goa |
Counted from the new IPL retention deadline, teams have 29 days before the mini auction, by NewsPlainly’s count. The old date would have left 31, the same gap as last year, from 15 November to 16 December 2025.

What IPL retention means before a mini auction
IPL retention is each team’s decision on which contracted players stay for the next season. Anyone not retained is released and can register for the auction, where any team can bid for him. Trades between teams are a separate route, and two have already gone through for 2027: Delhi Capitals brought back Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, with wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav going the other way, and Delhi sent fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari, ANI reported.
The December event is a mini auction, the smaller kind held between the big reshuffles. ANI and Business Today both described it as the last auction of the current cycle, with a mega auction due before the 2028 season.
The rules come from the IPL Player Regulations for 2025 to 2027, which the IPL Governing Council announced in September 2024. The limit of six kept players in that release applied to the 2025 auction, the mega auction held in Jeddah in 2024 as WION noted. It did not apply to last year’s mini auction: the IPL’s own release says teams kept 173 players in all, 49 of them from overseas, with Punjab Kings keeping 21, the most, against a squad limit of 25. Kolkata Knight Riders kept 12, the fewest in the IPL’s table.
How much money the teams take to the IPL 2027 auction
This is the number the coverage has not supplied. None of the reports read on 2 November gave each team’s auction purse for 2027, and the purse each team takes to Goa will depend on whom it keeps.
What the regulations do fix is the wider salary cap. For 2027 it is ₹157 crore a team, up from ₹146 crore in 2025 and ₹151 crore in 2026. That cap is not the auction purse: it covers the auction purse plus performance pay and match fees. Each player who takes part in a match, including the Impact Player (the substitute who can replace a starter mid-match), gets ₹7.5 lakh a match on top of his contract, the regulations say.
For scale, the 2026 season’s numbers are on record. After retentions closed in November 2025, the 10 teams had ₹237.55 crore between them for 77 open places, the IPL said. Kolkata had the biggest share at ₹64.3 crore and Chennai Super Kings the next at ₹43.4 crore. Adding each team’s spending to its remaining money in the IPL’s table gives ₹125 crore for every one of the 10, so that was the ceiling each team worked with last year (NewsPlainly’s calculation from the IPL table).
One rule matters for anyone signing up now. A player who registers, is bought and then makes himself unavailable before the season starts is banned from the tournament and the auction for two seasons, under the same regulations.
Who is in the auction pool and what is still open
Registration for the IPL 2027 auction is where the speculation now sits. Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who took British citizenship in May 2026, said on X that reports linking him to the IPL 2027 auction were not true, India Today reported on 2 November, citing Geo Super.
Dates for the 2027 season itself are not final. When the IPL set out windows for the 2025 to 2027 seasons in 2024, it marked 14 March to 30 May for 2027, ANI reported, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated after the board’s annual general meeting in September that the tournament could start around the end of March.
The next fixed point is the IPL retention deadline itself, 17 November, when the lists close. Last year the IPL published every team’s retained players and remaining money on the day the window shut.
