Why it matters

The canal supplies irrigation and feeds water systems downstream of Haridwar. Its reopening is a step towards restoring those supplies, but household distribution depends on treatment plants and the local network restarting.

Ganga canal flow at Haridwar in Uttarakhand resumed at midnight between 7 and 8 November 2026 after an 18-day maintenance shutdown, officials told the Press Trust of India (PTI). Water returned towards Har Ki Pauri as the Upper Ganga Canal reopened, while an Amar Ujala report said supplies to affected Ghaziabad and Noida neighbourhoods in the National Capital Region (NCR) were expected to restart from 9 November.

Those are separate stages. Releasing water at Haridwar does not itself confirm that treatment plants and every household connection downstream have returned to normal. Amar Ujala’s Ghaziabad report described an expected restart, rather than a verified account of water reaching homes.

Ganga canal reopens after annual repairs

The Upper Ganga Canal is shut each year for cleaning, repairs and maintenance. The latest closure began around midnight on 20 October. Amar Ujala’s Haridwar report quoted Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department executive engineer Vikas Tyagi saying the essential canal work had been completed.

PTI reported that the flow was restored at the end of the annual closure, with water levels returning towards ghats that had been affected. Har Ki Pauri is among those bathing places. The shutdown concerned the canal and affected ghat channels, rather than the entire length of the Ganga ceasing to flow.

This year’s work also served preparations for Haridwar’s Ardh Kumbh in 2027. Bharat Bhushan, a sub-divisional officer in the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department’s Headworks division, told PTI that the closure had provided time for construction at the ghats.

Ghaziabad supply was expected from 9 November

Amar Ujala’s Ghaziabad bureau reported that irrigation officials expected canal water to reach the city by the late evening of 8 November, followed by the resumption of Ganga water distribution from Monday, 9 November. The report named Indirapuram, Vaishali, Vasundhara, Delta Colony, Brij Vihar, Siddharth Vihar and Noida among the areas awaiting relief.

Two plants at Siddharth Vihar, with capacities of 240 million litres a day and 120 million litres a day, had been shut during the canal closure, the newspaper reported. The plan was to restart the plants as canal water returned.

Their combined capacity is 360 million litres a day, calculated as 240 plus 120. That is the capacity of the two facilities described in the report, not a measurement of the volume already treated or delivered after reopening.

Underwater repairs complete, finishing work still due

Ardh Kumbh Mela Officer Dayanand Saraswati told PTI that repairs to submerged sections of 34 existing ghats on the Upper Ganga Canal and 22 on the escape channel had been completed. Together those are 56 existing ghats, by NewsPlainly’s calculation.

That repair count is separate from the plan for ten new ghats spanning 3.25 km along the canal and escape channel. Officials described about 12.5 km of existing ghats and approximately 16 km of organised bathing space for the coming gathering. These are project descriptions, rather than proof that every planned facility is open now.

Saraswati said work was moving from submerged structures to finishing and beautification of the new ghats. The target for that remaining work is 30 November. Canal reopening therefore marks the completion of a phase of work, while the finishing deadline remains ahead.

Why the Ganga canal closure matters beyond Haridwar

A Hindustan report published before the shutdown quoted irrigation officials on annual desilting of branches in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Ghaziabad and Hapur. It described the canal’s role in irrigation and water supply, explaining why maintenance at Haridwar affects places downstream.

For this reopening, the date households need is the expected 9 November distribution restart reported by Amar Ujala. The material reviewed establishes water release at Haridwar and an expected city-supply timetable; it does not establish that every affected connection is already receiving its normal supply.
