Why it matters
This is Spain's second deadly high-speed rail crash in 2026, after 46 died near Adamuz in January. Indians on the two trains, or their families, can reach the Indian embassy in Madrid for help. High-speed trains between Madrid and southern Spain are disrupted, which affects anyone with tickets on those routes.
The Spain train crash near Urda, in Toledo province south of Madrid, has killed 69 people, Emiliano García-Page, president of the Castilla-La Mancha region, said on Friday, 30 October 2026, according to the Spanish news agency EFE. He did not rule out more deaths, saying 70 missing-person reports had been filed. Two Madrid Seville train services, both high-speed, collided on the morning of Wednesday, 28 October.
In the Urda train crash, a Renfe AVE (Spain’s high-speed service) ran into the back of an Iryo train that had stopped on the line. Euronews reported that the Renfe train had 397 passengers and the Iryo train 147, including a baby; ABC News, using Spanish Transport Ministry figures, gave 146 for the Iryo train. Euronews put the number injured at more than 100.
Spain train crash death toll: what officials have said
The Spain train crash toll has moved more than once. On 28 October the regional government gave figures that rose through the day to 68. On Thursday, 29 October, Spain’s Interior Ministry said the toll had reached 74, ABC News reported, but the prime minister’s office and the Transport Ministry then revised it down to 69. Euronews said that revision came from Spain’s rail accident investigators.
On 30 October García-Page said the figure stayed at 69, EFE reported. He also spoke of up to 31 bags of human remains still being examined, which are not counted in that number, so the final toll is not yet known. Deaths are added only once checked by the courts and the Guardia Civil, Spain’s national police force, he said.
The Guardia Civil said one of its officers, who was travelling on the AVE, was among the dead, Castilla-La Mancha Media (CMM), the regional broadcaster, reported. Spain began three days of national mourning on Thursday, and King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia visited survivors and relatives at the hospital in Toledo that day, Euronews reported. It said the hospital was treating 15 people in intensive care and 8 on general wards.

Timeline of the Urda train crash morning
Euronews pieced together the minutes before the collision from the Transport Ministry’s reconstruction and from control-room recordings published by the Spanish newspaper El País. All times are local (Spain is 4 hours 30 minutes behind India). EFE is Spain’s state news agency; PTI and IANS are Indian news agencies.
| Time | What happened, as reported |
|---|---|
| 8:30 am | A computer failure knocks out LZB, the system that tells drivers on the line how fast they may go, over about 63 km; six trains stop |
| 8:36 am | A controller at the Atocha control centre in Madrid, run by the rail infrastructure company Adif, lets Renfe AVE 2080 move again under lineside signals; the driver asks for confirmation and gets it |
| 8:41 am | The Iryo driver reports her train is stopped near Urda and is told she may move again |
| 8:48 am | The Iryo driver tells Atocha she cannot restart the LZB system and is still standing; the AVE is not told to stop, according to the El País recordings |
| 8:53 am | The AVE, about 25 km on from where it restarted, hits the back of the Iryo train at kilometre 118 |
From the go-ahead to the impact took 17 minutes, by NewsPlainly’s subtraction of Euronews’s times. Transport Minister Óscar Puente has called the order that let the AVE run normally “inexplicable”, Euronews and ABC News reported. According to Euronews, the reconstruction said the train had been cleared for normal running rather than at the low “on sight” speed of 40 km/h used when a driver must be ready to stop.

What is known about the investigation
Two inquiries into the Urda train crash are running. A court in Orgaz, Toledo province (Court No. 2 of First Instance and Preliminary Investigation) is leading the criminal investigation. Euronews and CMM reported that it has declared the proceedings secret, sealed off a stretch of about 2 km of track, ordered the black boxes of both trains to be seized and told judicial police to collect evidence from the Atocha control centre. Separately, Spain’s independent rail accident investigators are looking at the technical causes and will make safety recommendations; they do not decide who is to blame.
What is not known yet: the cause has not been established and no one has been held responsible, Euronews noted. The open questions it listed are whether controllers followed the rules, what information Atocha had on its screens, why the AVE was not told to slow down or stop after the Iryo driver’s warnings, and whether other safety systems also failed. The speed of the AVE at impact has not been confirmed in the reports read for this article.
The Spain train crash is the country’s second deadly high-speed crash this year. In January 2026, an Iryo train and a Renfe train collided near Adamuz in Córdoba province, killing 46 people, ABC News and Euronews reported.

Helplines for families, and the Indian embassy’s appeal
On 28 October the Embassy of India in Madrid asked Indian nationals who were on the two trains in the Spain train crash, or their relatives, to contact it for help, PTI and IANS reported. Its post on X, as quoted by PTI, did not say whether any Indian was on board. The numbers it shared, and the court’s victim support line reported by CMM, are below.
- Embassy of India, Madrid: emergency helpline +34 650 339 008, email cons.madrid@mea.gov.in
- Renfe (families of passengers): 900 10 10 20
- Iryo: 900 001 403
- Victim care centre of the Orgaz court: 925 317 020
Madrid Seville train services after the crash
Adif suspended high-speed traffic between Madrid and the south after the collision, and Renfe blocked AVE ticket sales on the Andalusia corridor until December, CMM reported on 28 October. Iryo cancelled its services from Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station on the southern route with no date to restart, ABC News reported. Travellers holding a Madrid Seville train ticket, or one to Córdoba, should check with the operator before travelling.
