Why it matters
A 15-day shift changes the revision calendar of every Madhyamik candidate in the state, and the board says a later Madhyamik means the Higher Secondary dates have to move as well. Until the department decides, students and schools are working with a February routine that may not hold.
Madhyamik 2027, West Bengal’s Class 10 board exam, may begin on 2 March 2027 rather than 15 February. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education (WBBSE) has sent the state School Education Department a revised schedule running from 2 March to 16 March, because many teachers will be on Census duty in February, board president Laltu Das told the Press Trust of India (PTI) on 3 November 2026. It is a proposal only: the department has not approved it.
The Class 12 exam could shift too. The Indian Express, citing School Education Department sources, reported that the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) is expected to ask for its fourth-semester Higher Secondary exam to move from the first week of March to after Holi. The reports NewsPlainly read do not say that the council has sent such a request yet.
What the WBBSE proposal for Madhyamik 2027 says
Under the plan, the first paper would come 15 days later than now scheduled and the last one on 16 March, according to PTI and The Indian Express. Das was careful about its status. “This is a proposal. Nothing has been finalised yet,” he told PTI, explaining that the teachers who conduct the exams have to be deployed for Census enumeration in February.
School Education Minister Dipak Burman said much the same to The Indian Express: “This is yet to be finalised. We got such a proposal and are considering it.”
The daily timing would stay as it is, PTI reported. Students get 15 minutes from 10.45 am to read the question paper and write from 11 am to 2 pm, the same hours set in the board’s original notice.
The board’s reasons, as The Indian Express described them, are mostly practical. Groundwork for the February dates was well advanced, but holding papers while teachers are on Census duty, counting households, would strain invigilation, logistics and centre management. The board added that moving the Madhyamik means the Higher Secondary exam must move as well, so the two exams do not clash over exam centres. It said its revised plan still leaves room for evaluation, marks entry and results on time, so students are not held back for Class 11 stream allotment or national entrance exams.

Old Madhyamik routine against the proposed March window
WBBSE notified the 2027 programme in a notification dated 13 July 2026, with one subject a day over eight exam days. The notice also says the board can change the dates or times if needed, after informing everyone concerned. The table sets the July routine beside the new window. The reports read give only the proposed start and end dates, not a revised list of which paper falls on which day, so that part is still unknown.
| What | July routine (notified) | November proposal (not approved) |
|---|---|---|
| First paper | Monday 15 February 2027 | Tuesday 2 March 2027 |
| Last paper | Thursday 25 February 2027 | Tuesday 16 March 2027 |
| Length of exam window | 11 days | 15 days |
| Daily timing | 10.45 am to 2 pm, first 15 minutes reading | Same, PTI reported |
| Subject-wise dates | In the notice (below) | Not given in reports read |
For students planning revision, this is the Madhyamik routine the board notified in July, paper by paper. It is the only official subject-wise list so far.
| Date (July routine) | Paper |
|---|---|
| 15 February 2027 | First Language |
| 16 February 2027 | Second Language |
| 18 February 2027 | History |
| 19 February 2027 | Geography |
| 22 February 2027 | Mathematics |
| 23 February 2027 | Physical Science |
| 24 February 2027 | Life Science |
| 25 February 2027 | Optional elective subjects |

Why Census 2027 clashes with the February exam dates
West Bengal is among the states where the house-to-house population count for Census 2027 runs from 25 January to 28 February 2027. PTI reported this on 30 October from a notification by Registrar General and Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan. The states left out of that window were Manipur, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Ladakh, along with snow-bound parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. A short revisional round to catch missed households follows from 1 to 5 March.
The Indian Express put the end of this second phase at 1 March 2027 and said the board’s proposal followed a communication from the Census Commissioner. Census field work draws heavily on school teachers, including many from secondary schools, the paper reported. Either way, the whole of the July Madhyamik 2027 window, 15 to 25 February, falls inside the counting period.
What the Madhyamik shift could mean for Higher Secondary students
The 2027 Higher Secondary exam for Class 12 is held in semesters. The third-semester papers were held from 21 September to 7 October 2026, according to the WBCHSE routine dated 25 June 2026. The fourth semester, the final round, had been due in the first week of March 2027, The Indian Express reported.
A Madhyamik running to 16 March would reach into that slot. WBBSE has said the Higher Secondary exam would need new dates so the two do not clash over exam centres, and the council is expected to propose dates after Holi, the paper reported. No revised Class 12 dates had been reported by the time of writing.
When will the final Madhyamik 2027 routine be known?
The School Education Department has to decide on the board’s proposal first. The reports read do not say when that decision will come. As of 4.25 pm IST on 3 November 2026, the routine linked on the WBBSE website was still the July notice with February dates.
Until a new notice appears on wbbse.wb.gov.in, and for Class 12 on wbchse.wb.gov.in, the February routine is the only one the board has formally issued. More news from the state is on the West Bengal page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Madhyamik 2027 postponed?
Not yet. WBBSE has proposed holding it from 2 to 16 March 2027, but the School Education Department has not approved the plan. The routine on the board's website still shows 15 to 25 February.
What are the proposed Madhyamik 2027 dates?
2 March to 16 March 2027, PTI reported, with the same daily timing of 10.45 am to 2 pm and the first 15 minutes for reading. The reports read do not give a new subject-wise routine.
Will the Higher Secondary 2027 exam dates change?
Possibly. The Indian Express reported that WBCHSE is expected to propose moving Semester IV from the first week of March to after Holi. No revised Class 12 dates have been reported.
Why is WBBSE moving the Madhyamik exam?
Teachers who run the exam will be on Census 2027 enumeration duty, board president Laltu Das told PTI. In West Bengal the house-to-house count runs from 25 January to 28 February 2027.
