Why it matters

Money leaving AI-linked shares abroad is flowing into large Indian companies, especially private banks, which lifted the indices most investors track. Smaller companies fell and the volatility gauge rose, so the gains were not shared across the market.

Sensex today closed 1,718 points higher at 81,028.02 on Friday, 6 November 2026, a gain of 2.17%, while the Nifty 50 rose 2.01% to 25,030.35 and got back above 25,000. It was the seventh day in a row of gains for both indices, India Today reported, on a day when technology shares were sold off hard across the world.

The Sensex opened at 79,413.66 and kept climbing all session; its closing level was also the day’s high. The Nifty moved between 24,388.05 and 25,030.35, according to India Today.

Why Sensex today rose while world markets fell

The fall abroad was steep. The Nasdaq, the US index full of technology companies, dropped 6% in its worst day since the Covid crash of March 2020, and South Korea’s Kospi fell more than 9%, setting off a circuit breaker that halts trading, the Times of India reported. Investors were rethinking how much money is going into artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres, after the Democratic Party won control of the US Congress in the midterm elections and raised the prospect of tighter rules for the industry, according to the paper.

Indian shares went the other way. Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments, said investors treated India as a relatively safe harbour while markets abroad were in turmoil, both papers reported. He also pointed to a sharp weekly fall in crude oil prices, easing US bond yields and a firmer rupee. Lower oil prices give some relief to countries that import oil, such as India, India Today noted.

FII buying, meaning purchases by foreign institutional investors, is a big part of the stock market today story. These investors bought a net ₹14,975 crore of Indian shares on Thursday, according to provisional National Stock Exchange (NSE) data cited by the Times of India, which called it their largest single-day buying in many years. They have been net buyers on every trading day this week, the paper said. It also reported hopes of relief on long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax as one reason investors were returning; the reports read did not say any such change has been announced.

The table shows the rally was narrow. Big companies did the lifting: private banks led, with the Nifty Private Bank index up 3.22%. Smaller companies fell, and the Nifty Midcap 100 ended flat at minus 0.02%. India VIX, which measures how much swing traders expect in the coming days, jumped 13.35%, a sign that worry had not gone away, India Today noted.

Which Sensex and Nifty 50 shares gained the most

In the Sensex today, Mahindra and Mahindra was the top gainer, up 6.15%, after strong second-quarter results, according to India Today and the Times of India. Private banks followed: ICICI Bank rose 4.65%, HDFC Bank 3.56%, Axis Bank 3.19% and Kotak Mahindra Bank 2.68%. Titan gained 3.36%.

Almost every Sensex stock ended higher. Power Grid Corporation was the only one in the red, down 0.57%, India Today reported. Large technology names in India rose only a little, with Infosys up 1.25% and TCS 0.20%, while the Nifty Media index was the weakest sector, falling 1.52%.

Earnings have helped too. VK Vijayakumar, chief investment strategist at Geojit, told the Times of India that the rally had support from earnings growth that has come in better than expected. The paper added that even after this week’s gains, the Sensex and Nifty are still well below their record highs, after months of selling since the start of the year.

What a 2% day means for an ordinary investor

To put the move in rupees, here is NewsPlainly’s illustration. Someone with ₹1 lakh in an index fund that tracks the Nifty 50 would have seen it rise by about ₹2,010 on Friday, the index’s 2.01% gain. The Sensex’s previous close works out at 79,310.01 (81,028.02 minus 1,718.01), by our calculation. This is not advice: a single day’s move says nothing about the next one, and smaller-company funds lost ground on the same day.

Investors will next watch the US jobs report due late on Friday, Indian time, Nair said, as US Federal Reserve officials have hinted at more rate rises. He also noted that Samvat 2082, the Hindu calendar year many traders follow, is drawing to a close; Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November. More on markets and money is on NewsPlainly’s Business page.
