Why it matters

Lakhs of retail investors applied for Jio shares, and the listing price now decides what their allotment is worth. At about ₹12.5 lakh crore, Jio Platforms enters the market as one of India's largest listed companies, so its shares will carry weight in the market from its first day.

Jio share price opened at ₹1,358 on both the BSE and the NSE on 28 October 2026, 21.36% above the ₹1,119 at which Jio Platforms sold its shares in its record initial public offering (IPO). That gave the Reliance Industries telecom and digital arm a market value of about ₹12.5 lakh crore at listing, making it India’s second most valuable listed company after its own parent, according to Business Standard and The Times of India.

For investors who got shares in the allotment on 26 October, the Jio IPO listing answered the first-day question within minutes. By 11.51 am, the stock had touched ₹1,375 on the BSE and ₹1,374.50 on the NSE, The Times of India reported in its live coverage. This article covers the listing and the first trading hours; prices move through the day and are given here with the times they were reported.

How the Jio share price moved in the first hours

Trading opened at ₹1,358 on both exchanges in the Jio Platforms listing, Business Standard and Reuters reported. In early deals the stock ranged between ₹1,356.40 and ₹1,375, according to The Times of India. The company trades under the ticker JPL on the NSE and code 545004 on the BSE, so investors looking up the Jio share price will find it under those names.

The Jio share price at the open matched the hint from the grey market, the unofficial and unregulated trade in shares before they list. The Times of India said grey market quotes ahead of the debut pointed to a premium of about 22%. Those quotes are not exchange prices, and the actual listing came in slightly lower, at about 21%.

A retail investor who received one lot of 12 shares in the Jio IPO paid ₹13,428. At the listing price, that lot was worth ₹16,296, a paper gain of ₹2,868 before brokerage and tax. The gain becomes real only when the shares are sold. Employees who applied in their reserved quota paid ₹54 less per share, or ₹1,065, according to the issue details on Chittorgarh, so their gain per share at listing was ₹293.

Jio Platforms listing value: checking the ₹12.5 lakh crore

After the IPO, Jio Platforms has 9,20,90,30,830 shares, according to the issue details. Multiply that by the Jio share price at listing, ₹1,358, and the company is worth ₹12,50,586 crore. That matches the ₹12,50,586.39 crore that The Times of India reported for early trade on the BSE, so the ₹12.5 lakh crore figure follows directly from the share count.

At the ₹1,119 issue price, the same shares were worth about ₹10,30,491 crore. In NewsPlainly’s calculation, the listing added roughly ₹2.2 lakh crore to the company’s value in the first minutes of trading. By the time of the ₹1,375 high, The Times of India put the value at ₹12,57,401 crore.

Reliance Industries stays the largest company by market value, and Bharti Airtel, Jio’s telecom rival, slipped to third, according to BSE data cited by Business Standard. Reliance holds 64.48% of Jio Platforms, The Times of India reported, and keeps majority control after the listing.

What came before the Jio IPO listing

The IPO raised ₹30,213 crore through a fresh issue of 27 crore shares at a price band of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119. Because all of it was a fresh issue, the money goes to the company rather than to existing shareholders. Business Standard reported that part of it will repay debt at Jio’s telecom subsidiary, with the rest for general corporate purposes.

As NewsPlainly reported when bidding closed on 23 October, the issue was subscribed 22.19 times. Qualified institutional buyers, such as mutual funds and insurers, bid 70.55 times their quota. Retail investors bid 2.72 times theirs, which is why many small applicants did not get shares. Business Standard put the non-institutional quota at 14.09 times, the employee quota at 2.93 times and the Reliance shareholder quota at 7.60 times. Before the issue opened, 212 anchor investors took shares worth ₹8,109.85 crore.

At the listing ceremony, Jio Platforms managing director Akash Ambani said the issue was fully subscribed within 95 minutes of opening and called the listing “not a finish line, but a starting line”, The Times of India reported. Mukesh Ambani, the Reliance chairman, was teary-eyed as his children spoke about the company’s journey, the newspaper said in its live coverage.

How the Jio IPO listing compares with India’s biggest IPOs

Big Indian listings have a mixed record on their first day. Data compiled by Bloomberg, published before Jio’s debut, showed that the four Indian IPOs this decade that raised at least $2 billion fell by a weighted average of 9.9% on their first day, and only the National Stock Exchange’s listing in September rose. The 21% gain in the Jio Platforms listing breaks that pattern, at least for day one.

IPO Amount raised First-day move reported
Jio Platforms (October 2026) ₹30,213 crore Listed 21.36% higher
Hyundai Motor India (October 2024) ₹27,870 crore Not given in the reports read
LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of India) about ₹20,500 crore Fell nearly 8%
Paytm (November 2021) ₹18,300 crore Fell more than 27%
Tata Capital (October 2025) ₹15,500 crore Listed 1.23% higher

A first-day gain says little about later returns. Bloomberg’s data also showed that each of India’s five biggest IPOs before Jio was trading below its offer price, with Hyundai Motor India about 6% below, at the time of its report.
