Why it matters

The clash is the latest flashpoint between the TMC, now in opposition, and the BJP, which runs the West Bengal government. Banerjee has accused both the police and the courts of failing to act, while the only police account so far comes from officers who were not named. For people in south Kolkata, it came a day before Kali Puja on Sunday, 8 November.

Groups clashed outside Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee’s home at Kalighat in south Kolkata between about 2 am and 3:30 am on Saturday, 7 November 2026, his 39th birthday, the Hindustan Times reported, citing police officers probing the incident. Banerjee said BJP supporters attacked his house and called it the seventh attempt on his life in six months. The BJP disputed his account.

Police officers told the paper that eight people were allegedly injured in the Kalighat clash, which broke out as supporters prepared for the Abhishek Banerjee birthday celebrations. The police did not name any party, according to the report.

Abhishek Banerjee home clash: what he says happened at 2 am

In a post on X, quoted by India Today and the Times of India, Banerjee wrote: “After two days of continuous recce, this is how BJP hooligans attacked my house at 2 AM today. Watch the footage and see for yourself.” He added: “This is the seventh attempt on my life in the last six months. Yet, there has been no police action and no judicial intervention.”

He shared two videos. India Today described the first as showing a man striking the gates of a building with a bamboo stick, with Trinamool flags on the building, and the second as a crowd throwing objects into the building while a few police personnel pushed people away. India Today noted that the Kalighat residence is also one of the party’s oldest offices.

Speaking to reporters around 3 am, Banerjee said, as quoted by the Hindustan Times: “Planned attacks were carried out at my residence and office by BJP workers. There was a conspiracy to kill me.” He said he saw a police officer “being slapped hard by BJP workers”, and that at least eight people were hurt, three of them seriously. The Hindustan Times reported that the police officer it spoke to did not confirm that any police personnel were injured.

Banerjee also criticised the courts. “Thank you, Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court of India, for remaining mute spectators while all this unfolds,” he wrote, according to the Times of India. India Today reported a confrontation between Banerjee and the police outside the house, after which he sat on a brief dharna. The Hindustan Times said the dharna lasted until 6:30 am, although the violence had ended hours earlier, according to police.

The BJP’s reply to the Kalighat clash claim

West Bengal panchayat minister Dilip Ghosh of the BJP questioned the claim. “This is the first time we’ve seen a politician’s birthday being celebrated on the footpath. If someone creates a disturbance, there is bound to be a backlash. Besides, who has the time to kill Abhishek Banerjee?” he said, according to the Times of India. He said the TMC was “attempting to mislead people”.

In remarks reported by the Hindustan Times, Ghosh said he did not have the details but had heard that something happened while Banerjee was celebrating on a pavement. “People usually rent a hall for such events,” he said, adding that people “often lose their senses after an electoral defeat”.

The two sides gave opposite accounts of how the Kalighat clash started. Trinamool supporters said BJP workers attacked without provocation while they were preparing the birthday celebration, the Hindustan Times reported. BJP workers said they were the ones attacked, while on their way to Kalighat to buy Kali idols from local potters for Sunday’s puja. The paper also reported allegations that BJP supporters shouted “chor” (thief) and damaged birthday cutouts and banners.

Who says what: claims and the police account

NewsPlainly has set the three accounts side by side from the reports read. Party claims about the Abhishek Banerjee home clash are not police findings.

The only police account in these reports came from officers who spoke without being named. “The situation is currently under control. A big police contingent has been posted outside Banerjee’s home. Several people have been detained,” one officer told the Hindustan Times around 7 am. None of the three reports read gave an on-record Kolkata Police statement, an FIR or the names of anyone held.

How the night at the Abhishek Banerjee home unfolded

Before the Kalighat clash: the surveillance complaint

The clash followed Banerjee’s complaint about the men outside his office. “Why is the State Police allegedly spying on and snooping around the office and residence of an elected Member of Parliament? Who authorised this surveillance and for what purpose?” he wrote, according to the Times of India. He tagged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kolkata Police, the Union Home Ministry and West Bengal Police, and asked for an immediate inquiry into who sent the men and why.

The reports read did not say whether any of them had replied. Banerjee, the Diamond Harbour MP and his party’s national general secretary, is also in a separate case: the Supreme Court has asked the Calcutta High Court to hear his plea about a media trial. What comes next after the Abhishek Banerjee birthday night

Kalighat is also preparing for Kali Puja on Sunday, 8 November, which the BJP workers mentioned in their account. The three reports read did not include an FIR, the names of anyone detained or an on-record statement from Kolkata Police.
