Why it matters

Thirteen men held in criminal cases are still at large near the Tamil Nadu and Kerala border, and police have set up checkpoints on the main hill routes. It is the second escape from a Tamil Nadu jail this month. The DGP has said a full inquiry will follow once all the men are back in custody.

Seventeen inmates escaped from the Thekkampatti jail near Andipatti in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district late on Monday, 26 October 2026, after prison staff opened their cell to help a man the others said was having a seizure. By Tuesday morning police had caught four of them, and 17 special teams were searching for the other 13. The Theni jailbreak is among the largest prison escapes in the state since 1995, according to the Indian Express.

How the Theni jailbreak happened, hour by hour

All 17 inmates were held in the same cell, police said. At about 10.30 pm, some of them called the warder on duty and said one inmate was having an epileptic fit and needed help, The Hindu reported, citing preliminary inquiries. When staff went inside, the inmates allegedly attacked them and ran.

Vijayendra Bidari, Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the South Zone, told reporters it appeared the prisoners had staged the illness to get the door opened. The Indian Express reported that the 17 inmates left through the main gate of the Theni jail. How they got past it is now a central question for investigators, the paper said.

Here is the sequence as officials have described it so far:

  • About 10.30 pm, 26 October: inmates report a seizure in their cell and ask for help (The Hindu, citing preliminary inquiries).
  • About 11 pm: the 17 men get out after attacking the staff who came in (The Hindu).
  • About 11.20 pm: prison authorities inform the police of the jailbreak, IGP Bidari told the Hindustan Times.
  • Night of 26 to 27 October: one man is caught hiding in a forested patch behind the jail, an officer told the Hindustan Times.
  • Morning of 27 October: the count of those recaptured reaches four, the IGP told The Hindu.

One jail staff member, a Grade 2 police constable, suffered a head injury and was taken to a government hospital. Two other prison personnel had minor injuries, according to the police account reported by Mint and the Indian Express.

Where police are searching for the 17 inmates

Theni sits against the Western Ghats, with hill roads leading over the border into Kerala’s Idukki district. That geography shapes the manhunt. The Indian Express reported checkpoints on the main Kerala routes at Kumily, Cumbum Mettu and Bodimettu. A senior officer told The Hindu that teams were also combing forest areas along the Ghats and in Idukki.

Photographs of the 17 inmates have been shared with police across Tamil Nadu and in Kerala. In neighbouring Dindigul district, Superintendent of Police S Jeyakumar said checkpoints had been set up at 16 places as a precaution, Mint reported, quoting the news agency Asian News International (ANI). Police in Madurai were also alerted, and vehicle checks were reported as far away as Villupuram.

Theni Superintendent of Police K S Praveen Gowtham is leading the investigation. Director General of Police (DGP) Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal, the state’s police chief, told The Hindu that a full inquiry would follow once the remaining 13 were back in custody. The Kandamanur police station has registered a case, the Indian Express said.

What is confirmed and what the reports disagree on

Early accounts of a fast-moving case often differ. NewsPlainly checked these points about the Theni jailbreak across four news organisations’ reports, published between 7.26 am and 9.09 am IST on 27 October:

Question What the reports say
How many escaped 17, in every report read
How many recaptured 4 by Tuesday morning (IGP, The Hindu; police, Mint). An earlier Hindustan Times report said 1
Legal status of the men Remand prisoners or undertrials (The Hindu, Indian Express, Mint); the Hindustan Times called them convicts
Where they are from All from Madurai (Indian Express); many from Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Salem and Villupuram districts (an officer to The Hindu)
Charges they were held on Not immediately available, the Indian Express said

The difference over the legal status of the 17 inmates matters. A remand prisoner or undertrial is someone held while a case is still being investigated or tried, and is not guilty in law. A convict has been sentenced by a court. Most reports, and the officials quoted in them, describe the men as remand prisoners.

The IGP told the Hindustan Times that police had full details of every man who escaped but that it would not be appropriate to share them yet. NewsPlainly is not naming any of them, or the man who was recaptured first, because the material NewsPlainly read did not include an official list from police.

Other Tamil Nadu jail escapes

The Theni jail at Thekkampatti holds more than 500 inmates from several districts, according to the Indian Express. The paper put Monday’s escape among the largest in Tamil Nadu since 1995, when 43 suspected militants of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) got out of a special detention camp inside Vellore Fort through a tunnel about 153 feet (47 metres) long.

It is also the second escape from a Tamil Nadu jail this month. On 13 October, two inmates got out of the high-security Puzhal central prison near Chennai, the Hindustan Times reported. Fourteen special teams were formed and both men were caught in Chennai two days later.

What happens next after the Theni jailbreak

The immediate task is finding the 13 men still at large. Until then, the checkpoints on the hill roads out of Theni and in Dindigul stay in place, police said. Once they are caught, the DGP has said, the department will hold a detailed inquiry into how the escape happened. Investigators are already examining whether the medical call was staged and how the group reached and passed the main gate, the Indian Express reported.

The reports read did not say whether any jail staff have been suspended or questioned so far. No official quoted in them said whether anyone will face action. Anyone with information about the escaped men can contact the nearest police station; police have circulated their photographs to stations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
