Why it matters

This is about five times the 3,539 posts of the last TGT drive, so far more posts are open this time. Graduates with a B.Ed and a TET pass have one month to register and pay, and missing the OTR step means the application will not count.

UP TGT recruitment has opened for 17,735 posts. The Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), the state body that now hires teachers for schools and colleges, put out Advertisement No. 07/2026 on 23 October 2026, and registration starts on 24 October. The written exam is set for 23 and 24 December 2026, and every candidate must first complete a One Time Registration (OTR) on the commission’s website.

How many UP TGT posts there are, and in which subjects

TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teacher. In Uttar Pradesh the post is officially called Assistant Teacher (graduate pay scale). All 17,735 vacancies are in government-aided private secondary schools, which are run by private managements but whose teachers are paid by the state. The detailed advertisement says 16,193 posts are in boys’ schools and 1,542 in girls’ schools, and that the numbers were supplied by the Directorate of Secondary Education in Prayagraj. It also warns that the count can still go up or down.

Five subjects account for more than two thirds of the posts. These figures come from the advertisement’s Table 01:

Subject Posts Subject Posts
Hindi 2,791 Home Science 798
English 2,517 Art (drawing) 775
Science 2,493 Biology 660
Social Science 2,482 Agriculture 248
Maths 2,349 Commerce 134
Sanskrit 1,289 Urdu 103
Physical Education 849 Music, Ranjan Kala, Sewing 247

By category, 6,704 posts are unreserved (General), 4,438 are for Other Backward Classes (OBC), 3,698 for Scheduled Castes (SC), 2,882 for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and 13 for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Reserved seats are only for people whose home state is Uttar Pradesh; candidates from other states apply as General.

Who can apply for a UP TGT post

The advertisement sets three basic conditions for every subject:

  • Degree: graduation with at least 50% marks in the relevant subject, or a postgraduate degree with at least 45%.
  • Teacher training: a B.Ed (Bachelor of Education) from a course recognised by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). Physical Education candidates need a B.P.Ed or B.P.E instead.
  • Eligibility test: a pass in a Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for the upper primary level, classes 6 to 8, held by the Uttar Pradesh government or the Centre.

Some subjects ask for more. Hindi applicants also need Sanskrit at Intermediate level (or Uttar Madhyama). Social Science needs any two of History, Geography, Political Science and Economics; Science needs Physics and Chemistry; Biology needs Zoology and Botany.

The minimum age is 21 on 1 July 2026. The advertisement sets no separate upper limit, but the job retires at 62, and an applicant older than that on 1 July 2026 will be rejected. Men cannot apply for posts in girls’ schools, except blind candidates for Music. Women may choose boys’ or girls’ schools, but only one of the two for each subject.

The commission says it brought in OTR for the convenience of candidates, and it accepts applications only through this system. The steps, as set out in the UPESSC advertisement:

  1. Go to upessc.up.gov.in and open the link for TGT Advertisement 07/2026.
  2. Complete the One Time Registration (OTR). A user manual in Hindi and English and tutorial videos are on the site.
  3. Fill in the TGT form in English, picking the subject and the type of school (boys or girls).
  4. Upload a photo and signature on a white background as JPG image files of 10 to 100 kilobytes each, and certificates as PDF files of 20 to 200 kilobytes.
  5. Pay the fee by 23 November and keep the receipt.
  6. Make any corrections by 26 November, and keep three printouts; two are needed at document verification.

The date of birth is taken from the High School certificate. For help, the advertisement lists a technical helpline, 08448573939, and the commission’s number, 0532-2466851.

What the UP TGT exam looks like

Selection rests on a single written test on an optical mark recognition (OMR) sheet, the machine-read answer sheet where candidates fill in bubbles. There is no interview. The paper has 120 multiple-choice questions, 30 on general knowledge and 90 on the chosen subject, for 360 marks in 2 hours. A right answer earns 3 marks and a wrong one costs 1.

That negative marking changes the arithmetic of guessing. By NewsPlainly’s calculation, a candidate who attempts 100 questions and gets 80 right ends with 240 minus 20, or 220 marks, while leaving those 20 doubtful questions blank would also give 240. Each wrong answer wipes out a third of a correct one.

The question paper is in Hindi and English, except for language subjects. If two candidates tie, the one with the higher graduation percentage goes first, then the higher B.Ed percentage, then the older candidate. Exam centres will be at district headquarters, with the district shown about 10 days before the exam and the centre about 3 days before.

Why 17,735 posts is a big jump

The last TGT drive, Advertisement 01/2022, had 3,539 posts. A UPESSC notice of 16 October 2026 shows that drive is still being finished, with the English result released and a revised Hindi result issued, both subject to the final orders of the High Court on pending petitions. The new advertisement is about five times the size of that one, by NewsPlainly’s calculation.

UPESSC itself is new. It was set up under a 2023 state law and took over hiring from older bodies, including the Secondary Education Services Selection Board. In September 2026 it advertised 12,405 Assistant Teacher posts and 2,607 lecturer (PGT) posts, with exams also due in December, Business Today reported.
