Why it matters
More than 1.3 lakh candidate entries were decided today, and the result sets each student's next step: move on to training, rewrite one group, or rewrite both in January. A pass in one group is kept, so students who cleared only one need to prepare for the other three papers.
The CA Inter result 2026 for the September session was declared by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), the body that runs the chartered accountancy (CA) course, on the morning of 22 October 2026. Only 13.21% of the candidates who wrote both groups cleared them together, and two students from Maharashtra share the top rank with 502 marks out of 600.
CA Intermediate is the second of the three levels a student must pass to become a chartered accountant, after the Foundation exam and before the Final. The September papers were written between 4 and 15 September 2026, Mint reported.
CA Inter pass percentage by group
The course has six papers split into two groups of three. A student can write one group or both in a session. According to the ICAI result data, as reported by the Free Press Journal and Careers360, the numbers were:
Group I: 1,00,301 candidates appeared and 23,210 passed, a pass percentage of 23.14%.
Group II: 68,400 appeared and 12,938 passed, or 18.92%.
Both groups together: 38,339 appeared and 5,066 passed, or 13.21%.
Put simply, about one in four students cleared Group I, while only about one in eight of those who attempted the full exam in one sitting got through both groups. That leaves 33,273 candidates in the both-groups category who will have to write at least some papers again.

Who are the CA Inter toppers this time
Neel Rajesh Shah from Mumbai and Chandak Sakshi from Nashik are joint All India Rank (AIR) 1, each with 502 marks, or 83.67%, NDTV and Careers360 reported. Shruti V from Chennai is AIR 2 with 492 marks (82%), and Prem Agarwal from Surat is AIR 3 with 490 marks (81.67%), according to Careers360.
The merit list, which names the top-ranked students, is published on the ICAI results website along with the scorecards. Among the CA Inter toppers, Maharashtra takes both AIR 1 places, while the next two ranks went to students from Chennai and Surat. The top score of 502 means the leading candidates averaged close to 84 marks in each of the six papers.

How the CA Inter result 2026 compares with last year
The CA Intermediate result is known for low pass rates, and this session is no exception. Still, it is better than a year ago. In the September 2025 session, 10.06% of candidates qualified in the intermediate exam, Careers360 reported at the time. This year’s CA Inter pass percentage for both groups is about three percentage points higher, though last year’s report did not split the figure by group.
The low numbers come partly from the strict passing rule. To clear a group, a student needs at least 40% in each paper and 50% in total across the three papers of that group, which is 150 out of 300. A student who writes both groups together can also pass by scoring 300 out of 600 overall, provided every paper is at least 40%.
Students who pass only one group keep that pass. They do not have to write those papers again, and can attempt the other group in a later session, Careers360 noted.

How to check the ICAI result and scorecard
Scorecards for the CA Intermediate result are on the official site, caresults.icai.org, and on icai.nic.in. Candidates need their roll number and their six-digit registration number. The scorecard shows marks for each paper, the total and whether the candidate has passed.
The ICAI result can also be had by SMS. Mint reported that candidates can send CAIPCNEW followed by their registration number to 58888. Students should keep a copy of the scorecard, since it is needed for the next stage of the course.
Verification of marks and the January 2027 exam
Students who think their marks are wrong can apply for verification of answer books, which checks for totalling errors and unmarked answers. It does not mean a full fresh evaluation. ICAI will announce the window on its website. Reports say the fee is ₹100 per paper, and applications can be made online or sent by post to the institute’s exams department in New Delhi.
Students who did not clear a group can try again in January 2027. The next CA Inter exam is scheduled for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 January 2027, at centres across India and in nine cities abroad, according to Careers360. Those who cleared both groups move on to the next stage of the course.
For the 5,066 students who cleared both groups, the result closes the middle stage of the course. For the rest, the gap to the January papers is a little over two months.
